For a span of 800 years, Beijing was the capital of China, to be specific, the provisional capital of Liao (907-1125) and capital for Jin (1115-1234), Yuan (1271-1368), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911).



Although it was used as the capital by one warlord or another, the modern history of Beijing as a capital begins in the Yuan dynasty with Kublai Khan, grandson of Ghengis Khan. It is here that Marco Polo made his base as he visited and travelled with the Khan. He spent over 20 years as a guest of the Khan before returning to Europe with his vivid descriptions of the great civilization to the east. Most of what we see today in Beijing was built during the Ming dynasty.



It is a city built to inspire, to awe the populace with the power of the emperor. Built for the rites and ceremonies performed to maintain the Mandate of Heaven as well as for defense, it achieves grace through power and size rather than through ornament and variety.

The culture of jade in China is deep and rich. Jade is loosely understood in China as the collective name for most precious stones, and jade carving in this sense constitutes an important part of Chinese arts and crafts. The love of jade ware has been one of the cultural features of China. Archaeologists have found crude jade tools dating back to the early Neolithic period (around 7,000years ago).

Chinese people even endowed jade with a lot of cultural connotations and made jade impersonated. According to the quality of jade people compared their virtue with jade. Jade is warm, smooth, lenitive with luster, which is like the virtue of benevolence. Jade is translucent and its flaws can be seen, which is like the virtue of honesty and loyalty. Jade can be broken yet can not be bent, which is the virtue of braveness. Jade can send good and clear sound when being struck, which is like the virtue of wisdom. It is sharp when cut but not injures people, which is like the virtue of righteousness. In ancient time gentlemen with good virtues wore jade and would not take jade off without special reasons. Actually the virtues of jade tally with the traditional Confucian norms, which were widely advocated by ancient Chinese.

Today there are jade workshops or factories in all major cities. Work which used to be done purely by hand has been partially mechanized. Although some operations have become faster with the use of simple machines, yet jade carving remains basically a handicraft art. And as raw materials are getting more and more scarce, the prices of jade ware will always be on the upward trend.

2009 China Eco-tourism Year Launched

You may think that China is big enough and old enough to protect herself, but the fact is, with the country finally opening up to the rest of the world, the deep wild China is about to be unveiled to and maybe stomped by millions. Promoting eco-tourism in China as visitors start to flood in will hopefully help it catch on! China offers the most spectacular views in the world whether you’re standing on the top of the Himalayas or on the shores of its golden beaches. Doing eco-tourism in China is the best way to experience the continent’s charms and leave having made a big difference.



Thankfully, China has declared 2009 as “the year of Eco-tourism”. The China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) hopes the event will promote the concept of environmentally-friendly travel, while encouraging resource saving tourism operations.

Launching eco-tourism in China is about approaching travel to China with the intention of leaving a positive rather than negative impact. It’s also about having a great time while you’re there and we think that getting mud under your finger nails and grass in your hair sounds like a lot more fun than looking through the window of a tour bus anyway! Experiencing a place means involving yourself with the issues that surround it rather than just taking a picture and heading off! Traditional Residence “Tulou”, Becomes World-Heritage Property of China

A Tulou building usually consists of rammed earth outer wall and internal wooden framework. Its unique structural form and ingenious interior design highlights the interdependent relation between clan members who live inside and demonstrates the development process of their life style.

In layout, the buildings nestled among hills and streams are harmonious with nature, reflecting Chinese traditional architectural designs, the Fengshui practices and the concept of unification between man and nature.

In addition, the Tulou buildings have nurtured local ways of production and lifestyles and fostered colorful intangible cultures.

In recommending the inscription of the Tulou buildings, ICOMOS, the professional evaluation institution of the World Heritage Committee, praised their breath-taking magnificence, unique and exquisite style as well as their durable and ingenious structure, saying they present a unique charm and outstanding universal value.

Starting from Sunday, members of the World Heritage Committee are examining the nominations of a total 47 cultural and natural sites submitted by 41 countries for inscription on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

UNESCO’s 1972 Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage now protects 851 properties of ” outstanding universal value,” including 660 cultural, 166 natural and 25 mixed properties in 141 States Parties.

The 32nd session of the World Heritage Committee opened July 3 and will last until July 10.

During the session, the committee will also review the state of conservation of the 30 World Heritage sites inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger and may decide to add new sites to that list of properties whose preservation requires special attention.

Oriental Valentine’s Day for Miao Minorities in Guizhou

On the fifteenth day of the third lunar month of each year, there is a very important festival called Sisters’ Meal Festival for local girls of Guizhou province to pursuit of their happiness. It is same as Valentine’s Day for westerners.
As legend told, three daughters find their true loves by following the advice of a local god, who tells them to prepare rice offerings for the young men arriving from the mountains. Today, this celebration of love and spring is done with all the pomp and color characteristic of the beautiful Miao minority. This is Sisters’ Meal Festival, filled with very real stakes, and unlike any other you’ll ever see.
There will be thousands of natives gathered from many miles around on that day. You could watch young Miaos begin their courtship for potential lifelong partners. The Miao girls appear dressed in their very finest, their self-made costumes a dazzling display of flowing colored sleeves, richly textured embroidery, elaborate headpieces and many layers of silver (altogether several kilograms worth, shiningly polished to ward off evil spirits).
¼br /> When unmarried girl harvest rice from the terraced fields and gather by the river to prepare it. The rice is cooked until it has a sticky consistency and is blue, pink, yellow, and white to represent spring, summer, fall and winter. The young girls then place some of the rice in small bundles of cloth as young men arrive and begin to serenade them. Each young man singles out the girl he hopes to marry someday. Although he sings about his hunger and thirst, his real meaning is: “I love you, do you love me?”
The young girl responds to his song by giving him a drink of rice wine and some rice wrapped in cloth. Her official reply is inside. If she has placed a hot pepper there, it is a flat refusal; one chopstick signals a more polite “no-thank-you” to his love. If he finds a leaf inside his bundle, he must first give her satin; and a piece of grass implies he must first supply her with a needle and thread before she will signal “love you too” with two chopsticks. For those who have already “exchange two chopsticks” at the river, the festival is also a time for married girl to return to their parents’ home. This is the only time that daughters see their parents and the one occasion that sisters sit down together all year. The rest of the days are spent with their husbands’ families. Girls arrive on foot laden with chickens, rice cakes and bolts of hand-woven cloth for their families. Their husbands remain at home.
The spectacular pageantry carries on for several days, with girl performing songs and dances, flirting as their cheeks burn with excitement. All the while, the ongoing clamor of drums, firecrackers, dragon-lantern battles and water buffalo contests ensure there is never a dull moment.

Come and Meet Giant Panda in China

Cute faces, unusual beauty and grace…They bring visitors to China pleasure and enjoyment. They are China’s National Treasure-Giant Pandas! Paleontologists have discovered fossil remains that indicate that over 8 million years ago ancestors of the giant panda were living in China. That is the reason why the giant panda is has been called one of China’s “living fossil” by historians.

We can know how Chinese People love Panda from the examples that Jingjing, a panda, becomes one of the five Official Mascots of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Jingjing is charmingly naive and optimistic. He brings the blessing of happiness. Jingjing is an athlete noted for his strength, and represents the black Olympic ring.

However, these adorable creatures are on the verge of extinction. Today there are fewer than 1,000 giant pandas living in the world. The giant panda is the symbol of eco-environmental conservation. Visitors to China can see this reclusive animal in Sichuan Province’s Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Over 80% of the world’s giant pandas live in Sichuan Province. The Chinese government now has established two large breeding bases to breed and save this precious species. One is the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Keeping the public aware of the status of endangered species are the most important educational functions of the Chengdu Panda Base.



The base covers an area of over 359,000 square meters and it is now under expanding for an area to over 1,999,000 square meters. It appears to be a beautiful landscaped park, and it is home for for giant pandas, red pandas, and other Chinese endangered animals.

Luxuriant bamboo grow everywhere around the base. Here 15 pandas live a protected life, where visitors can view them eating, sleeping or playing. Visitors can also learn more about this precious species in the giant panda museum. The panda hospital can also be visited, where there is a 7,000 square meter educational space for the foreign and domestic visitors. In these learning areas, visitors will come to know more about the work being done to preserve this lovely animal.

Through the conservation education in the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, foreign or demestic vistors are offered a chance to experience the enjoyment derived from the interaction between humans and non-human animals and learn the necessity of conservation of natural habitats.
